Applying a texture to a cube using C4D standard render you can set the texture to:
  • Projection: Flat
  • Side: Front
And that texture will only be displayed on one side of the object. (the viewport will display incorrectly both sides textured, but will render only one side textured)

aoktar has posted many examples of texture stacking on this forum, but all suffer the same problem: the texture is displayed on both sides of the object even with "front" selected.

Is this a bug?
Whats the fix for this in octane?
Is there a better way to apply decal style graphic layers?

In Octane, you need to use the Side node, for example in the amount of a Mix/Composite Material.

Back/front face assignment is not a supported feature for stacking. You should choose a manual way as bepeg4d said

Hey guys I appreciate the reply but it appears the Side node is referencing polygon normal, toggling which normal side the texture is to be displayed on - correct?

(for reference, C4D is setup to say "when the Flat texture's Z axis collides with polygon normal's Z, it renders that face only. The opposite side of the object's normals point away from the flat texture's Z axis, and do not get rendered)

Take a look at the attached pictures. Is there a better way to apply decals? I could use polygon selections but that isn't as flexible and I would prefer to work non-destructive.

Thankyou!

I'm not sure what I'm looking to! Could you put a example scene to show what you want to obtain in standard setup?

The goal is to only show a decal on one side of an object. Preferably with an interface that is easy to manipulate and experiment with position.

I found this example here that accomplishes the goal but it has problems too
download/file.php?id=61318&mode=view

This example uses triplaner to restrict a decal to one side of an object; however, this means it doesn't work on curved surfaces and is laborious to change it's position. (experimenting with position is not quick or fluid. To change position you would have to rewire the triplaner node to a different axis and rotate the axis handles in the viewport)

The C4D interface lets you manipulate a texture position using position and rotation handles in the viewport, which allows for quick and exact placement that is easy to change. I'm curious if theres a way to do this in octane and only have the texture appear on one side of the object. (orientation side , not normal side)

I still cannot understand how do you obtain this! Adjusting mapping from c4d's UV mapping tool? Plugin will convert any projection type of c4d texture tags to uv-mapping and will give you exact results.

Any movement on this? I'm attempting the same thing. If only we could have a Unreal Engine style decal system in OC.
