hi,i've seached and couldn't find much about 4 gpus. anyone had experience with that? if you were building a new system from scratch what would be a good mobo recommendation for quad cards?

It works fine, but you need to get 4 identical cards, like 4 GTX460 2GB if you want to render large scenes, or 4x GTX480 if you want to have more speed.
An ASUS workstation class motherboard has 4+ PCI-E sockets, eg, the ASUS WS extreme for example.
You will also need a 1200+ watt power supply, depending on the other components in your machine...
EDIT: these are cheap gaming type boards, not expensive server type boards and use standard core2 i7 CPUs, not dual or quad xeons etc...

You need to make sure you have enough pci-e slots of at least 4x speed for the 4 cards and these cards are 2 slots wide so they need to be spaced accordingly. There are only a few mobo that fit that description and they are expensive workstn ones.
