There is a daylight system, do you find it? Here's a snapshot showing where it's at... read the manual... note that transparent objects (or opacity-mapped) currently blocks direct light as if it were opaque, so window glasses won't allow direct light to enter the room for example...

If you still want a direct light dropping some sort of hard shadows, HDRI is not that effictient... you can try to boost up the hdri's gamma, to a point where you should see shadows, but probably it will take forever to clear up the noise.
PS: I prefer hdri for lighting for the simple reason that at least it gives you a background and something nice for stuff to reflect, whereas skylight doesn't. My dream would be for Octane to have independent slots for illumination, reflection, refraction and background.
