Im assuming from Sketchup? In sketchup, what I did was created a component for my lights. Its a cilinder with a smaller circle offset and pushed towards the ceiling just a little bit to depress it. The smaller circle, I made the material some crazy color like magenta so that I could notice it right away in octane. I exported, went to the material (by clicking on it in the overall view that you can get to by just clicking on your obj in the graph editor. Keep the material a defuse and at the bottom of the options is one called emission. Its currently at null, but change it to blackbody. THen you can play with the power options (i don't really see differences with the other two options). Hope this helps.

The light idea is the current best practice.
You can use scenes and animation export to control individual obj files for each frame - In the dialog answer 'No' when asked if you want to use the first scene's settings for each animation frame - then it takes longer as many more temporary files get made - but it will then pick up changes between the frames.
