Using volume within a volume changes the way it looks

Hi,

I have a landscape and I placed an Octane Fog Volume on it to have a nice fog effect in the distance.

In there, I made a Turbulence FD simulation of a rocket launching. Unfortunately, when I apply the Octane Fog over it, it changes the way the simulation looks... It becomes just a blob of white smoke without shadows.

I tried using the Fog of the OctaneDayLight. There the rocket smoke was good, but the overall fog is not as nice as the Octane Fog Volume and it makes the image much darker. I also lose the sense of depth. You can see the DayLight fog is going over the mountain in the foreground and it looks like a gradient over a 2D image instead of a natural mist.

Is there any way I can keep how my rocket smoke simulation looks while also having the fog volume ?

Thanks a lot ! :)

Is it possible to move the Fog Volume past the rocket.? Then the additive 'white' wouldn't apply.

Hi TonyBoy, thanks for your answer. The rocket is already inside the fog volume box, if that's what you mean.

EDIT: Oh I see ! So I put the rocket OUTSIDE the volume box, and the rocket smoke looks as it should. Very interesting. But unfortunately the fog doesn't look the same because the volume box is much closer, so some mountains are outside of it too.... I think I will just use a Z pass and add fog in after effects.

I was thinking a move of the volume past the rocket so that the rocket was between the volume and the camera.

otoy still didn't fix this bug I told them many times. When a small volume is inside a large volume, the small volume quality becomes like a large volume or you can see borders of a small volume.
Octane does not render volumes as good as vray does

We have plans to improve this in 2019. For now, consider increasing the medium radius of the daylight fog you have. That should include the mountains at the back, and will render faster than a fog volume.
