Could someone please describe in short steps how to set up a texture environment correctly? :?
I have tried a number of HDRI images from various sources but never succeded. What I expect is a sharp image as environment without any seems. What is Octane expecting regarding file formats, dome, cross etc...?

For backgrounds the hdr are rectangular format (also called lat-long).
I dont think it matters exactly what the ratio is but 2x1 and 4x3 are fairly common.
To have something displaying reasonably sharply you will need a fairly high resolution - something at least 3000 or 4000px wide but all backgrounds end up looking slightly blurry even 6000x3000 ones. To have the least background blur you should run the aperture setting down to near zero in the Mesh Preview Camera settings.

To set an hdr as a background go to the Preview Environment in the Node Inspector and change the texture type from floattexture to image. You will then be presented with a window to navigate to your hdr and select it.
You can make adjustments to the rotation, scale, power etc in the same panel.

Thanks a lot pixelrush,

i didn't know that the lat-long format was the correct one. Will try it out later today.
