I'm just starting to learn my way in Octane ... and new iMac pro will arrive within next weeks... All this CUDA and GPU thing is yet a bit of mess for me at the moment.
Do I understand your point correctly, that under newest MacOS Mojave, there is no way I can use Octane even with external eGPU?
Yes, this is correct so far.

Rumour is that Apple's exclusivity contract with AMD expires this month and we'll see Nvidia-based Mac Pro models in the new year.

We're counting on improved MacOS support with Octane 2019, but it is too early to get into specifics until things are further along.

Hi,
you can install any kind of PC GPU, Kepler, Maxwell, or Pascal in eGPU under High Sierra.
Only new RTX architecture is not currently supported.

Sounds like it, but let's wait for someone else to confirm it as I'm only a beginner.

But yeah, MacOS releases are always lagging behind, it's one of the reasons why I'm sticking to 2 computers, a Linux laptop and a Windows desktop, the others being (for the desktop one) modularity and compatibility with other accessories.

Let's just hope that MacOS and Apple computers don't go the way of the iPhone and that they'll stay compatible with USB stuff and other things instead of developing a whole line of dedicated Mac accessories, because then it'll be a huge blow to compatibility. I already work with a couple colleagues who use Mac computers and it's always fun to take compatibility issues into account when you're planning something...

The whole issue with drivers for Mojave has become a bit ridiculous. Nvidia claims they are working with Apple to bring CUDA support to Mojave, people a making petitions, RED Digital Camera president is publicly asking Apple to support Nvidia GPUs, Arnold developers won't support it's GPU version until Apple allows Nvidia on egpu enclosures etc.

If you can stay with Sierra or High Sierra for now don't upgrade your system until Nvidia releases drivers for Mojave.

egpu.io is a great resource.

And the folks on the forums are generally very helpful and friendly.

Our shop is using several eGPUs and Octane under Sierra without much trouble.

There are a couple of super handy configuration/installation scripts for both Sierra and High Sierra that should get you up and running pretty quickly. They are open source and hosted on github. You can find links to them in the forums.

Hi, I’ve just upgraded to Mojave, because I have to work with AutoCAD now. And this Version of AutoCAD needs Mojave. But now I have a render job again and my Octane 4 is not running. :-(
  • There is no actual CUDA driver for Mojave
  • There is no Octane that is running on an iMac under Mojave.
So, what can I do now? Buy VRay?!? I don't want to leave the Octane platform!
Is there a download for Octane X available, perhaps a public beta?
