Hi, new layer systems would be great if it worked. For now I've found one serious bug. There are no reflections and shadows visible from other layers.

Hi J.C,
Thanks for your report.
In current version(16.2.6), this function is used to provide another way for assigning layer id.
Previously it only can be set under "Data-Octane properties-Layer number". Currently, if you set the "Data-Octane properties-Layer number" as 0, blender will use the layer id you set in "3D Viewport-Visible layers" - which seems to be easier for blender users.
You can turn this feature on as default from "User Preference"-"Add-ons"-"OctaneRender Engine"-"Use Blender Built-in Render Layer".
But for now, it is only used for layer id assignment - so it will not enable octane render layer automatically for you. If you want to render some specific layers in octane, you need to enable "Render Layers-Octane render layers" yourself.
In the next build, we are going to enhance this feature - by introducing "Render Layers-Octane render layers" for each render layer you have created. At that time, you are able to enable octane render layer system, change active layer id and render mode for each render layer independently.
Cheers,
DrawFun

Thanks, I understand now. Could you provide more information when introducing new features? New system can be misleading as blender users expect it to behave same as it works with cycles.
The name should not be "Use Blender Built-in Render Layer" but "Use Blender Built-in Layers to assign layer IDs"
The new system does not use Render Layers as in Blender but only layers.

This is implemented in 16.2.8.
