This is off topic for Blender, not Octane. :P

Allow me some time to fiddle in Blender, and I'll see if I can come up with a solution.

Curtains are a 2D object, why do you need SSS? Translucency & transparency should do it.

Under the shading panel, try checking "Tangent Shading".
Doing that will make it look like this (that's Suzanne behind the plane):

You might also want to try selecting raytrace transparency, turning down the alpha and also turning down the gloss to a value where it fully blurs what's behind the curtain so you can't see it (or you might want to leave it up a little bit for a teeny bit of transparency in the curtain.

By the way, that was achieved without tampering with any other settings, so maybe try from scratch or adapt it to your current material setup.

P.S. Curtains look a tad thick... Perhaps you've done that deliberately while trying to get SSS working, though.

Thanks for all of the suggestions,

i have looked at some stock image examples and the curtains do indeed cast a shadow, but for the illumination coming off of the curtain will be taken care of with an increase of energy with a tint of yellow ;)

Time to do some cloth baking :D

If you're using the blender internal, you need to turn on transparent shadows in the materials on the desk. Otherwise blender does not calculate these by default.
This should help.

I wish I could help on this one, but the cloth simulator is something I still need to get around to learning :P
