Even with benchmark scenes.

Which GPU driver do you use for this version?

I've got 1080Ti + 2x1070.
Same on other machines:

Crashes on GTX780, GTX980Ti, GTX1070 and GTX1080Ti.

Defaultly the first device is selected for the denoiser and you can change from the preferences dialog. could you please confirm whether denoiser was crashing on the graphics cards you provided above or was running on any other device?

On another scene it works as expected, that is, after a short black image, the denoise pass "kicks" in and it shows a progressively refining image.. along with the main and noise pass that I often view.

Another thing, which may be linked to V4 early days... But I can only set ONE GPU to denoise in the preferences.
I run 6 gpus, 4 in an external rig, two on the mobo. All can be set to be active, or used for tonemapping, but only one can be set to the denoise. If I click on another GPU, it sets the first one off and puts a "tick" in the newly selected one, not both.
Is this correct?, only one GPU can be used for denoising?
Yes, for now, we support only one device for denoising and denoiser pass black screen might be for out of memory, check the log window for more details.
Thanks, but I cannot see where the log file is, that is there is no button, or menu selection that is "log file".
The other thing is that as I mentioned, if you hover over the tab "DeN" next to main beauty pass, it does show denoise in progress and a number of samples which does change with time, but the screen is black.
Also, just this very minute I was testing a scene which was "black" for the denoise pass, but had 2000+ samples attributed to it, I was looking for the log file and clicked a button... don't know which one, but maybe scene node inspector collapse, uncollapse and the denoise pass magically appeared in the viewport. My onscreen bar does not show all memory used up, there is a small amount free.

Edit... Ok, maybe not magically... maybe co-incidence, I have looked at the progress much closer. It seems that the denoiser kicks in after 430 or so samples, why I don't know as it is set to 10 the Default, so I'll have a look at the scene I had issues with, maybe I didn't let it cook enough and I may have only had 2 GPUs on not the 6.

Second edit... No, it's weird, some scenes work and some don't. Yes there are problems with the scenes, as most are exported from Modo through the plugin and then I've been using that ocs file to test and perhaps I've been a bit slack with keeping things clean and neat. A lot of the scenes have multiple area lights and IES lights, so how that affects things when sent through the plugin I don't know. Normally its fine, but for the denoiser perhaps not...? Some scenes produce a denoise pass within a second or two of starting rendering, some as above, 20-30 seconds or so (400+samples) and others nothing at all even after 8000 samples.

Denoise doesn't work at all on high resolutions, say 4 or 5k rendering. Is this deliberate? When the min sample threshold is reached, it doesn't do anything. VRAM usage remains the same and doesn't go up, just a black screen.

Try to dedicate one video card (if applicable) to the denoiser, I mean deactivated it for rendering and activate it for denoiser.
It helped for me ;)

Thanks, that is a pity though, you lose a whole card's render performance that way... :(

Well actually it seems that you can use only ONE card for the denoise already as it seem on my rig that switching the second card ON for the denoise turn the Other One OFF, unless I have restrictions or sort OR this 2 card only works when the system recognize up to 3 cards to leave one doing other job...can't say

Feedback after some more tests:

I used 3 GTX 1070 for rendering and one GTX 780 dedicated for denoising.
Windows 10
Nvidia drivers 391.24 (last one)

Tried to render an image twice in 2560x1440 and Octane crashes with BSOD in both tests after about 4 min and around 120 samples.
The two cards in my Cubix expander (1xGTX 1070 and 1xGTX 780) are not anymore available after restarting the PC, I should switched it Off to get them up again.

Yeah, it could be a little easier to find. Look in the Octane Settings window, Settings tab, Other sub-tab, at the bottom. There you'll see, "Log Output" with a pull down menu and a button called "Show Render Log."

Currently, the memory usage is high. we have plans to reduce it, but our current target is to make it stable and better. until then this will be a restriction.
