* So, should all the uploaded materials be present in the final render(s), or can we post some of them separately on a simple mesh or preview ball?
* Also, do we have to upload all the materials that will be present in the said render(s)?

I think neither of those should be a requirement, because it will limit what could be created. Say you have an interior for your final render, and you have created modern materials for it. But you want to create also some rusty metal - there's almost no way to put that in the interior scene, but you don't want to model a separate scene just to show the rust.

I would say; make one final render (or more if you like), that contains some of the materials you plan to upload - but not all of the materials in the scene need to be uploaded (although, some of them must). The rest of the materials (if any) can be presented on simple models or preview ball.

i'm silently observing and taking notes.

we're going to try to get a decent amount of these new GTX450 or GTX460 cards as prizes, so there's an initiative for other artists to win something usefull instead of a license, instead of the usual 3-4 top artists who will always get the expensive prizes.

please continue adding your ideas and reflections to this thread, and we'll compose a competition that will be the best one yet.

I like to introduce a material challenge.
Like the challenge here:
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthr ... light=cube
But for materials, this opens the challenge for not advanced users.
I post this:

Cheers, mib
EDIT: rerendered in octane, of course.

You could use a standard scene for all of the artists to map and texture. I loved the idea on Ronen bekerman's blog: http://www.ronenbekerman.com/challenges ... e/winners/

I think it's fine if you can see the materials on a practical environment where the good materials and the lighting make it or break it...

Probably the winner would be one of the masters that i often see around the forums ( i won't say names... :D )
but if we put as a condition to take the price that the winner has to make a tutorial from the scene then we all win...how much does a good tutorial from a pro cost? 20-30$?? multiply that by the number of users able to learn form it and will you generate there a lot of value for the whole community.

I don't know if that was the case on the blog from Ronen Bekerman but the winner made a beautiful tutorial on his workflow: http://www.ronenbekerman.com/making-of- ... nd-benoit/

The Comp should be about the materials that you have created with an example render to show them off in their best possible light. Not sure that a hugely complicated Model is needed.Just one that shows how all the textures/Materials that you create would look on a model.Apply a 70% / 30% with a bias towards the materials. That way even the unskilled Modeller can have a go.Also that way all the best materials can go live along with a small thumbnail of the submitted render. This can be then viewed by anyone who is selecting that material to see how it would look in a render. Therefore both materials and accompanying renders can be used on the site once the competition has finished.
