I'm not familiar at all with Hypervoxels and how they relate/translate to Octane volumetrics, if at all.

Is there a way to render out or convert a scene like this (source in the link) to render similarly in Octane?

Hi,

The LightWave plugin supports procedural volumes inside spheres and other primitives. Perhaps instancing these volumes over the waterfall particles could be a good workflow to try to render these kind effects.

Thanks,

It is a custom object plugin. You can add it to any null object for a procedural box or sphere volume.

One of the biggest things that makes this effect work/look so well/good is the ability to STRETCH the voxel in direction of velocity...as well as the turbulance and rotations added at the bottom.

Are there ways to do similar things with Octane?

Are there was to render out voxels native to LW as volumes Octane can render/use?

I just don't use these tools much so I'm starting from scratch on both sides :)( Native and Octane.

Slightly related and slightly unrelated question. I had been looking for how to add open vdb's into Lightwave to render in Octane. With this post I finally saw the custom object for volumetrics. So I've been able to load in a vdb but its super pixelated. Not sure if this has to do with my settings or the original vdb file. I searched the manual but I can't find any documentation to explain all the settings inside of the octane volumetrics window. Also when looking at the manual I noticed its for version 3.06.4.0 and was published on May 26 of 2017. This was from the link in the test build post for 3.08.0.0 so it seems the manual is pretty out dated with a lot of the newer features not included yet. Is there a link to an updated manual that I'm not aware of?

Thanks

Not completely sure but I think if you increase the GRID as I remember that's like the resolution I believe.

Nope sorry. The LW hypervoxels featue never had a proper support in the SDK to extract the volume information for the external renderers, and in any case, the hypervoxels shading is not easy to support in Octane.

Probably at some point, the plugin could support the new LW2018 volumetrics, at least to extract the volume information. In any case, a volumetrics plugins like TFD or compute the volumetrics using as VDB sequences using an external tool like Houdini Indie is the way to go if you want to render high-quality volumetric effects.

Thanks,

If the volume is rendered pixelated, the problem is that it has low grids resolution. You should try to increase the vdb grids resolution to avoid this problem.

I agree that the LW plugin manual is outdated. A lot of new Octane 3.0 features are not there yet. We'll try to update it in the upcoming months. Meanwhile, you could check all the new features introduced in the Octane 3.0 builds in the Standalone posts available for each version. Usually all these features have the same workflow in the plugins.

Thanks,
-Juanjo
