Hi Paul,

In the past, we've had some discussion regarding clipping planes in Rhino and making them work within Octane. Not just for still renders, but for animations. I understand there are some complexities to this and that Rhino has made it difficult to implement.

What if instead of Octane working with Rhino's clipping planes, Octane for Rhino had it's Own Native clipping planes? Please see the video link below to describe what I mean. Go to 17:15. This is a peak at the latest V3 Vray for Rhino and they have done this. It is only a Vray clipping plane however, not a Rhino one. It has some cool features as well, like material assignment for the clipping plane surface.

Is something like this possible in the Octane for Rhino plugin? Maybe this is easier???

Thanks for your time, as always, Paul.

Hi. The clipping plan in this case is natively supported by VRay. So to implement such clipping in Octane, Octane would need to support clipping planes that can be set by the users rather than normal to the camera. My understanding is that Rhino6 will hopefully address the Rhino clipping plane issues, so hopefully the OctaneRender for Rhino plugin can then be enhanced to pick up the Rhino clipped geometry (although the Rhino6 release seems to be some time away).

Ok, got it. Oh well, thought maybe there was a solution there!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for Rhino6 then.

Thanks Paul,

Hi Paul.

I noticed in the latest Vray for rhino video they have live clipping planes.

Have you made any headway with this for Octane? It would be a great asset.

Thanks

Hi Matt

It hard to tell if the actual clipping is happening from the Rhino end, or being applied by VRay. McNeel said clipping support would be available in Rhino6, however there are too many other issue at the moment to address before I get to check it out.

Hi Paul,

Thank you for keeping this on your list, it would be a terrific feature to have if it's doable.
