I spoke before I could test this...this method really doesn't work because then you have a massive polygon in your background, which shows up in specular objects, reflects, and blocks light from HDR images....so this method seems to be completely useless in my opinion.

Hi alecmaassen,
if you active the render passes with background and z-pass with aplha channel active, all should work as expected.
The plane parented to camera workaround, obviously, works well only when you have to render the z-depth in post with only 1 sample in the beauty for fast calculation.

Whenever I do still imagery, I always use the alpha channel and then save from the Live Viewer, however whenever I render an animation within the render queue, I don't see an option to use alpha for passes in the Render Settings. Could you explain to me how to use the alpha channel for passes when using the Render Settings and Render Queue?

Thanks!

I alecmaassen,
I guess that you are forgetting to enable the alpha also in the c4d Save dialog:

The saga continues... I am now have an issue where the z-depth channel renders solid black and white (no greys) in the Picture Viewer when rendered as a Render Pass.

Z-Depth Max is set in Render Passes in Render Settings to match those in LV. Z-Depth Info Channels render in Octane LV works fine. Also, if I switch Octane to Info Channels Kernel picture viewer renders Z-Depth like LV, but in the beauty channel - the Z-Depth channel remains the solid black and whites as seen in this screenshot.

Can someone please show me what I am missing here? Octane 3.04.3 OSX 10.11.6

Hi muchogrande,
please, try with Tonemapped instead of linear in the Tonemapped type:

I d strongly suggest to leave Z as is, linear linear, render exr and u ll have a pure white image. Dont be afraid its not wrong, go to ur post production software, disable alpha or u ll have edges problems, and adjust the levels of ur image till u see what u want.

This will only work when u are in 16 or 32 bit mode, nuke is 32 by default in AE u have to change to at least 16. cheers
