Hi Guys,
The GPU I am eyeballing for purchase is the Nvidia 1080ti. The main concern for me is power connection and power draw.
Context: My workstation is a 2012 Mac Pro 5.1, 12-core 3.46 Ghz. It's been widely reported (see links) that a 1080ti can cause a Mac Pro to shut down while performing synthetic bench testing. Specifically, the "Heavy Load Test" in Cuda-Z benchmark. The fixer for that potential problem is to draw additional power from an empty SATA HD bay, or lower optical bay.
Question : So this leaves me wondering whether Octane is a high power draw activity, or relatively low power activity? Don't know if it matters, I don't do animation, strictly hi res still images for print advertising. No Bootcamp, no gaming. Just trying to guess my odds that I will have to get crafty with my power connections If I buy that card for my Mac.

Hi Jack,
unfortunately, I have not directly tested GTX 1080ti on my Mac, but I have succesfully plugged different GTX in it, from Kepler to Pascal, with these two cables:
6pin to 8pin connector
SATA to 6pin cable
If I remember well, GTX 1080ti should drain roughly ~180W at full load in Octane, while GTX 1070 ~90W.
ciao beppe
