So i listened to a podcast featuring Jules Urbach talking about future of Octane and one thing caught my attention - apparently, thanks to some kind of cross-compiler they intend to make it work not only on AMD cards (actually doing on it already), but on CPU too, for people who i guess are on some integrated GPUs....

Now it came across like it should be an alternative to GPU version, i however wonder, and that would be far more interesting to me, if there is a possibility of Octane running on both GPU and CPU at once? Or has it to be one or the other?

Not really sure how fast it would be on CPU compared to GPU. Back in 2009, when Octane/Arion/iRay were brand new, their main selling point against CPU based renderers like Maxwell for example, was their speed, several times faster, literally turning render times taking days into hours... since then, i guess both hardware and software made some progress, so perhaps thats not so true anymore. I recall seeing some comparison renders between Octane, Corona and something else on utube and Corona was not exactly slower - and as far as i know, its CPU unbiased renderer.

I am currently looking at all those new fancy CPUs like AMD Threadripper and upcoming Intel i9s, cause after almost 8 years with Octane i was thinking about trying something new, like aforementioned Corona for example. If however, i could use such relatively powerful CPU compared to the past within Octane alongside my GPUs, therefore entire computing resources of my system, to further increase the rendering speed, it would be awesome.

CPUs are evolving, but GPUs are evolving way way faster. I'd be surprised if threadripper could even compete with a low end GPU...

Goldorak confirmed in a similar thread a ways back that CPU support will be just that. CPUs will be able to chip in, but their speeds are not likely going to blow your hair back. The same may end up being true with AMD GPUs as well. No one ever promised that they are going to be as fast/faster than NVidia GPUs in Octane.

Just saw some YouTube video discussing vray rt ....an extra twenty percent was mooted on sharing cpu with gpu ...not very scientific but worth mentioning.
