On the left is the matte material. On the right, the geometry for the ground plane is deleted. Why would it show up darker in areas that aren't receiving shadows?

Hi - when asking a question, can you tell me which release of the plugin you are using pls.

Without having access to the scene, it is impossible to tell. But at a guess I would say the ground texture is from the IBL on the Environment node. So ticking Matte causes the ground geometry to become a shadow catcher (as seen on the left). Deleting the geometry removes the shadow catcher (as seen on the right). So from the limited information provided, it looks like the plugin is working as intended.
