I have had this problem forever now and can't seem to find a solution, my material preview works totally fine in the normal material editor window but when I switch over to the node editor all the preview boxes are black, which makes for a odd way of making materials via the node editor. I am on a iMac, running C4D R16, with a eGPU running through my thunderbolt port. Is this a Mac thing? I know other people that run Octane on Macs and don't have this problem. This problem persists with all materials(LiveDB included) and in saved and unsaved files.
Any ideas how to fix this?

Hi chanson78,
please open Octane settings and go to Settings/Nodes and activate the Node preview option.

Node previews require that scene is sent to Live Viewer.

The "node preview" option was always enabled, that wasn't the problem and I always sent to the Live Viewer. I found that enabling "auto load materials" and "update previews on drag" fixed the problem but only sometimes. With more complex node materials, materials with more than 10 nodes for example, the problem still persists.
