Hi Guys,
I am trying to figure out the difference in needed specs for building a master and/or a slave PC.
I think the master is imagined to aim high on all aspects... CPU, RAM, mobo, ssd, etc...
but it seems waste of money to aim all high for slave as well.
What makes sense... where to aim high and where to go low when going for slave machine?
cheers,
i.e. ..I am running slave with double Titan Z on old mobo with few RAM
hardware config difference for master and slave?

Hello there ;) been a long time we've talked ;)
as for Your question, here are some thoughts on those questions from my perspective if You're interested.
building render node in the same form as Your main machine for some might seem to be a waste, however personally I do not think so & the reason being is that You might want to use Your render node as backup machine from time to time in case You have some issues with Your main rig, or.. You might want to fire up two render jobs simultaneously.
However if You're strictly into OctaneRender having fast beating quad core is more than enough as getting more than that might not be practical for strictly OctaneRender targeted build =)
if You're looking for some good options now, look at some higher end motherboards from z170 to be coupled with last get CPUs - that combination would offer great value =)

Hey Glimpse,
yeah, that has been a while.. always nice to hear (see) your words.
I totally agree on the backup PC.. therefor the slave with high specs is great.
I was thinking about if you have more slaves, and then putting a lot of RAM on the high end mobo with newest CPU would be a waste of money when having a backup machine already.
A side question:
with CPU's I also noticed the difference in cache...15MB, 20MB, 30MB (Smartcache)... how imoprtant could that be for OctaneRender of for a 3D-modeller software.
Uptill njow I only have paid attetnion to Ghz and number of cores, and made sure there were enough lanes for the number of GPU's
Where does the cache plays a role?

rappet - if you need 7 gpus in a single case - cut into single slotted:
Master: dual e5 with as much power as you need but 2x1650v4 are way more than enough unless you need 2699
Even 1620v4 are superb! These e5 destroys any i7 not even talking about stability with ecc. Two of E5 are even cheaper than any 40 pcie laned i7, 6850k...
Slave: dual e5 2603v4, a single 16gb ecc stick, 128 ssd for system and you are done.

Indeed, I did not know that yet.. Thanx for pinting out.mrom wrote:hey, isn't the e5-1xxx a cpu for single socket boards only?
I.e. The e5-1650 show it is not scalable:

@Smicha, did you manage to scale or use otherwise dual 1650 on one mobo?

Did you mean 2x2650v4 instead of 2x1650v4, since the 1650 is not Scalable?
