I've recently been getting a lot of hung C4D instances while the status bar at the bottom reads start/stop "mat checkandupdate" as per attached screengrab. I've left this going for minutes and it just doesn't seem to stop. Seems to happen more with Xrefs in the scene? Not sure.
Couldn't find any other results on the forum for that status message, "checkandupdate" all one word as it appears.

"Mat CheckandUpdate" hanging C4D?

In Live Viewer? So try with "syned aupdates checked". And also try to disable "shared mesh for render instances" if still happen.

It still seems to happen in the LV even with these options. What exactly do they do? I tried searching the forums for these phrases and nothing came up. There is a lot about the settings that is not explained either in the manual or through InLifeThrill.
What combination of settings will give the best LV performance please? Apologies if this has been asked, as I said information is often sprinkled throughout posts and not collected somewhere for reference.
At the moment if I move my camera, the LV won't update for some time. I have to click around the object manager, or wiggle the camera, or turn something on off, to get it to update. When it does update, if often says "updating" then shows me the old view, and so I end up going through this process twice to get a refreshed view.
I've been using Octane for about 6 months now but don't see the same kind of LV performance I see on demos or tutorials, where people can pan/zoom, spin the camera, etc and LV keeps up. I have 4x1070 here now so it's not a slow machine.
Conversely, it will update at strange times. Simply clicking (selecting) a camera tag will cause a redraw. Changing the name of an object in the object manager will cause the LV to flicker with every single keystroke. I think I've mentioned this before and have since updated hardware and Octane version and it still happens, I think you said this is particular to C4D only?
Just looking for the definitive answer on this.
Thanks!

I think i need to see your issue. Because it sounds strange. As you see in videos we use it very smooth even on weak machines. You seems like having a driver or opengl issue. Does it happen with simple scenes or every one? Have you tried with software opengl?

I'll try to do a screen record next week, I'm up against a deadline right now.
It's definitely been since day 1 of using Octane. My main work machine is a Mac Pro (cylinder) with 2 x external 980Tis, the kexts on Mac were modified as per the eGPU threads here on the forums and on TechInferno. Perhaps that is the reason. I also have GPUs via network in a PC but it's not my main work machine.
I'll post again when I can get a screen record on Dropbox or similar.
Cheers
Scott

Ehh why don't you say that at first? Most likely! Try without external gpus and play with option "minimize net traffic".sbstnc wrote:I'll try to do a screen record next week, I'm up against a deadline right now.

Without external GPUs? Then I can't use the Mac for any Octane at all.
Out of curiosity, have you looked at the Mac scripts that get the Nvidia's working, to see if there is anything that cause slower LV performance? Render speed and bench is fine, same as on other older Mac or PC, having tested this at various locations with different hardware. Just the new Mac Pro cylinder that LV performance is bad on? I can't migrate the project right now so I am stuck here for time being...

No! I'm not a good osx user. Just using it for building the plugins. So cannot help for that sorry. Maybe Beppe!

Hi,
I'm still on old Mac Pro, so I don't have a direct experience with Thunderbolt solutions, only a couple of tests in the past.
Anyway, looking at your particular issue, I wonder if is not related with how you manage and store your files and texture file format.
Could you share with us an example scene with all assets that shows the issure?
It would be helpful to better understand and try to isolate the issue.
ciao beppe

Hi Beppe,
Sure, I'll try to make one this week. I'm a bit under the pump with deadlines, just trying to get past these to get some breathing room.
Everything is on a fast RAID5, textures and jpgs/tifs/pngs, a mix really (some downloaded from LiveDB, others built, some Silverwing mats in there too). The RAID5 I use to get playback on 2k and 3k in realtime for TV commercial work and compositing, so I don't think it's to do with storage - there are no external USB drives or 5400rpm drives.
I've moved over to the PC and have noticed less of an interruption, but it's still happening, though it's much quicker to do the mat check and update. What I have noticed however, is that it also seems to be tied to C4D autosave? As in, it will do the matcheckandupdate, this will last maybe 30s, then C4D will autosave (set to every 5 min). I've tried turning off "check materials" but have yet to notice a big improvement, probably as I can't leave "check materials" off for long without needing to turn it back!
This is a big scene for sure, lots and lots of mats (maybe 100+) but still. Maybe an option to only check mats every X seconds, or only on hitting refresh/resend scene?
