So like most it seems - I'm building my first PC of any kind. I'm a mac user but I'm makin the switch. Using c4d primarily.

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/docphibs/ ... iew=LFBcf7

I plan on adding two more 1080's. I have a few questions..... Is that going to be cool enough with 4 stacked on top of each other??? I also am wondering about this motherboard. A lot of people I see choose the asus x99-e ws. I feel like I'm missing something because this MB is way cheaper and still has room for 4 cards. I also am trying to keep this as future proof as possible. I hear there's a new cpu coming out that offers 40 pci-e lanes.

Anyone have success too with hackintoshing these gpu machines? I would of course love to work on os x but... if it's really that big of a pain in the arse then no thanks.

If anything else stands out to you please let me know! I'm nervous!

Hey....

I'm building myself a similar system right now as well (awaiting for remaining items to arrive). Here's a few little points....

To put 4 GTX 1080s together, you got yourself the founder's edition, which are generally fine. They are double-slot sized gpus, they will run very close together and heat will become a problem. GPUs that overheat throttle down, and become a performance hit.

You will have to get a cooling solution that's able to cope with the heat generated. Water cooling is the likely solution if you plan on OC'ing them too. I've gone with 3x GTX 1080 hybrids with the built-in cooling. They're slightly more, and I don't have the big overhead costs (and worries) of water cooling. I might look into getting 1 more GTX afterwards, but will depend on the space to mount the radiator. If you plan on air, man, you better have amazing airflow. I'm not familiar with your case choice. I ended up getting the Thermaltake X71.

Next, with 4 GTX 1080s in mind, your 1000W power supply is really not going to cut it. You'll likely want a minimum of 1200W. You can calculate here:
http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/

Regarding CPU cooler, the Noctua NH-D15 is a bit better (about the same price point I think), but again, will depend on case size, and well.. if you'll go water....

I'm sure somebody here can chime in more, or go read in the licensed forum for more discussions, there's plenty of talk there from Tom and Smicha especially.

Thanks vchiline.

I have to look at the size of that case again. It's a case I found that's built for really good airflow... but I was worried I may not be able to fit 4 hybrids in there... maybe I can? And I agree with the sentiment of not wanting to deal with water cooling.

And thanks for the advice on the cpu cooler - that's one thing I'm really kinda lost on what a good purchase would be.

love to hear what glimps/smicha think :D

I'm not sure if my last comment posted? I'm not familiar posting to this forum. Not sure if they review your replies on this too before the comment is posted... *shrug*... gonna try again and see if this goes up... if not apologies for two replies...

I would love to hear from Glimps and / or Smicha. I wonder if I can fit 4 x 1080 hybrids in the case I chose. I also wonder if I need a water coolor too for my cpu? I'm really unsure of what to get to cool my cpu. I wasn't really planning on overclocking much of anything simply because it makes me nervous being that it's going to be my first PC I've ever built. If it goes belly up I'm going to know how to resolve it...

Thanks Vadim for the advice.

I think I'm going to take your advice and go with only hybrids. Being in a 1br apartment is going to be too fun if fans are going insane all night.

what case can even fit 4 hybrids though??

I got a Thermaltake X71 case, with 3 in it right now. I'll be buying a 4th soon.

Here's a pic from my setup:

This is somebody else's setup from the Octane Facebook page (Eric Christensen, using a Corsair 750D):

Thermaltake X5, X9

There are a few others too....

Thanks so much for sharing that!

I'll take a look at those cases. Helps a lot!
