I haven't stumbled upon the correct information yet, so I thought I'd post here. I'm using the Octane Object tag on 3 different elements in my scene, each one has it's own Layer ID (1,2,3). I'm also rendering the beauty pass using the Save option in the Render Settings. I'm achieving what I want. I see an object buffer/layer mask for the elements I need, and my beauty pass in the render folder. However, I've noticed that the render has to basically perform 4 renders to generate the needed passes. I see it render the beauty pass, then it restarts 3 more times to render the layer masks. I guess I was assuming that this would be much more like rendering a typical multipass image, in that it would just quickly seperate the elements into the respective passes, and not need to re-render so many things.

Am I missing something?

You don't miss anythings. It's a hacked way to obtain masks from render layer. It assignes the each IDs for render layer, render out one mask in one run of an info pass and give it to you. Try lower maxsamples for Info Passes.

Thanks for the quick reply. Good to know.

How low do you think I can go with the info pass and still achieve a good result? I know that every scene and render is probably different, but figured I'd ask as well. I'm rendering this using the Panoramic camera option at 4k wide for use in a VR 360 video.

Thanks.

It depends to scenes. You can't expect lighting fast render masks for 4k renders. My advice to use object layer colors if you need only 3 masks.
