Due to my other thread, I decided on getting a 2GB GTX 460, but then my friend suggested I don't bother getting the extra gig and go for a 1GB stating that the difference wouldn't be noticeable for the price difference. He knows a lot about computers, but not much about Octane, so I don't know how accurate his statements are.
Can anyone clear up the differences between more RAM and what I should be spending my money on?

For gaming and general use, 1 GB of RAM on a GPU is plenty. But for Octane, you want the most you can get. This is because Octane stores the entire scene, HDri environments, geometry, etc. in the GP memory. You'll really want the 2GB model.

Ok, thanks. Looks like I'll get a 2GB then. And once I get this all sorted out I can buy Octane :D

I just read about it today. When i built my rig few months back, I was going for the 2GB GTX 285, but no local store had it in stock--i ended up getting gtx 470. As the bigger Quadros are still out of my range atm, and the 3GB GTX 480 and 2.5GB GTX 470 are still unconfirmed, i'm also thinking about trading my 470's for these 460's. The extra 768MB framebuffer is obvious for Octane, but i read that the temps are also much better on these new chips (plus a cut on power drain as well). Or maybe i should wait a few more weeks...

anyway I think the 2GB 460's are the current best buy/bargain for Octane. You won't regret it ;-)
