This discussion reminds me on the case of the movie "The Man from Earth".
Maybe Refractive Software should do something similar by puting a DONATE button in front of the page just like http://manfromearth.com has.

Could be read like this:

"Octane may have been made on a low budget, but don’t be fooled, this application is made to the highest standards and well worth seeking out in you local software store."
-Refractive Software Network

Enjoy the Application? Help us Out!

Forget the others, the most of them are hunters and gatherers.
All this is very unrespectful about other peoples work.

I think if it was a crisis of some sort and your business would be shutdown, a good amount of enthusiastic people around here would probably help you out with the donations. - that is if you don't want to look desperate, or abusing the good will of the people.
But I also thought of the idea, it's like a stick and carrot situation, you know, we show you more donations you release a new version faster - because: you can hire some more people, or you just love the sight of money so much so you work that much faster :) (kiddin)
It's easy to abuse that kind of a system though, but that's something I would try and do just as a test if I had a nicely visited web site such a yours, and why am I telling you all of this and getting a little envious about my great idea, go on do it. Make a donation button if you really need the funds, I'll do you a euro if I feel you deserve some more..
I really hope the pirating situation didn't affect the business so far you would have to shutdown in near time.. and hope that you not playin us for that.. It could be true sales dropped because of the wait before the new version comes out. I actually am considering another licence if you open another 50% off sale, simply cause I think it's a good deal, and I spend more money on beer than that :) - I like to drink fancy strong belgium beers (and the ordinary cheap ones)
that's how that works

I've seen pirated versions of software that sells for $30. One of my friends write a VST (virtual instrument) plugin and sold it for $99 and 3 days after the release it was cracked. Drove him to never release another plugin. As said before, people will justify it anyway they can. The comment about cracks leading to more customers is total B.S. and they probably said it to help them sleep at night.
System 1: EVGA gtx470 1280Mb and MSI gtx470 1280 in Cubix Xpander for Octane, AMD 945, 4Gb Ram
All systems are at stock speeds and settings.

I agree that pirating is the same stealing as any other.

But regards opinion on popularization - if there were no software pirating all eastern Europe, Russia and I'm sure many other countries would use Linux (free software) Only. There was no chance someone would buy something and Ubuntu had a billion more users today (that could be cool in my opinion :) ). Instead, nowadays their Windowses etc. get licensed. Really slowly, but they do.
Of course microsoft is another story. They are big enough to survive such "popularization" and defend their rights.

Hi,

I've already said that the sole reason we're changing the versions is to lose the beta word so we can get reviews in magazines and sites.
Also, you need to keep in mind that we are developing octane using cuda on a GPU. many things which are trivially implemented on CPUs sometimes end up giving a lot of suprises when trying to adapt them to a GPU. We are in beta phase, many things change along the road to developing a complete engine, which is much more slow and complex to develop on a GPU.

You also need to keep in mind that brecht is joining, so development will go faster.

Personally Octane changed so many things regarding my work on 3D renders, I'm already quite glad to be able to work much faster thanks to Octane.
As long as the final result is great, I don't mind waiting...

Thanks for your hard work Radiance, keep it going !
