I have been doing some further tests on Octane in my endless quest to decide once and for all if it complements my work and work flow or not, (right now it's looking good) I have come up with another question which is what types of trees, bushes and other vegetation do any of you licensed and more experienced users use? I have tried Hi Poly Trees from evermotion which take days to convert into OBJ, only after you have simplified the geometry, but they do look good, I have also tried RPC Trees which also look good and are MUCH faster on the conversion but they only look good in the selected camera view, they do not follow you as they normally do in their host program. If anyone has an idea or knows if there is a better solution please let me and the rest of the community know.

For trees you need a GPU with lots of video ram, like a card with 1,5 or 2GB.
Also, instacing will arrive in the version after the next one, which will make rendering vegetation much easier.
I can't answer your question myself as i hardly have any time myself anymore to make renders.

In my experience, Onyxtree is great, good quality of trees, it can be tweaked for higher or lower res, and you can map everything quite easily, but it's hard to make trees under 30K polys, for those you can either use one of onyx, with few leaves, scale manually all the "leaves" and map branches, that way you can get nice 3k to 5k trees. There is tons of lowpoly trees out there, I think that Andrian somewhere used some brand of lowpolyes, but I can't seem to find it right now.
But once Octane gets instances, we can say goodbye to lowpoly trees!

then there's DPIT plants (for c4d only I guess), Xfrog and Speedtree which is free to use in unreal development kit but doesn't export to anything useful without the licencse, but looks most interesting to play with with.. I think all of those animate the trees..foxid wrote:Try Onyx Treestorm
look for free xfrog on seek.autodesk.com
Hey anyone got some more greenery software to recommend?
Also anyone has recommendation on some (free) cherry trees and the pear tree while flowering (has beautifull white flowers), made some in onyxtree but it doesn't have flowers as I remember couldn't find any on xfrog

look at the trees possible in Vue8xstream or vu8infinate there is a 3ds and lightwave export and you can reduce the polys in vue8 ...
mapping is sumptous and ever tree is different (just i cant get the 3ds export to work in my copy !!!)
anybody got a .lws to .obj file converter out there then i cuold try some trees out ..

I think okino's polytrans http://www.okino.com/default.htm is able to do it, also try 3d converter http://web.axelero.hu/karpo/
I know it's a stupid (or naive) thought, but there should only be one 3d file type, instead of waiting on "evolution" to go all darwin on some of them. We still got a lot going around.

Some perople licensed my tree and vegetation packs for their arch-viz stuff and though it looks good.
Initially they are made for games so they dont stress the gpu too much too.
