Hi Everyone,
Looking for some general advice here. I have always used PSD Manager for CEBAS to create a Photoshop document of all of my object mattes so I can quickly select any object in a rendering and tweak it easily without having to render out a dedicated matte. They are not seemingly going to update their software to 3dsmax 2017.

QUESTION. Other than using Material ID, how can I create black and white, super clean matte passes for each object in a scene, that I can use to make quick selections in photoshop ? The mat id, is good, but not ideal. First you have to actually cut out your selected color and you can lose quality that way. Second, the selection tool in PS does not work with 32bit images.

Hello, I'm using cinema4d but it should work in 3D max as well :

- set a layer id using the Octane Tag (ranges from 1-8) on each object you want a matte from
- in the render settings, in the "render layer mask" tab, check the id's you set earlier (no need to render layers per se, so you can leave "Render Passes" unchecked)
- render the scene and voilà, you got your B&W mattes for each group of objects using the same layer id.
