Since my original post, March 2015, there has been zilch done to add some basic functionality in this area.

Do the developers read these forums? An answer of some kind would be great. Even to hear if this is on the road map.
If it is not possible due to CUDA/GPU etc, again, it would be good to know so one can use a suitable renderer if the need arises.
