Hi,
I need a shadow pass for an important project that i'm doing.
Somehow the shadow pass is not showing like in version 2.4.
I created an example scene to illustrate my problem and approach.
I have:
* An object (floor) with an material set to matte
* An octane tag on the floor with layer ID set to 2
* In the rendersettings I anabled render layers, set it to 2 and anabled the shadows checkbiox.
In the render it remains white.
I guess i'm missing something?
There is a shadow in my scene (it shows when i disable render layers - see image)
Shadow pass in Octane V3 (C4D)

Oh yes,
And I already do know about this post:
viewtopic.php?f=30&t=51998
Pointing to the 3 render passes tutorials (done in version 2.24)
However in his tutorials, when he enabled the black shadows of shadow pass, it did show the shadows, that's what i need now as well in V3.
When I enable black shadows in V3 it stays blank for some reason. I hope i'm doing something wrong.
(in his tutorial example)

Can anybody confirm of recreate the problem?
These effects as shown in the following tutorial (creating shadows with the render passes) seems not to work in V3 on my system
Is this a bug?

It's working.TheOracle wrote:Can anybody confirm of recreate the problem?

Octane For Cinema 4D developer / 3d generalist

I thing I see where the miscommunication is taking place.
It does the following: (see image) Shadows are visible in there, but it's not a shadow pass.
(I'm using the definition we all got to learn with all previous render engines, Mental Ray, Vray, Maxwell, Arnold, Redshift etc)
A shadow pass would leave only the shadow.
In other words, even when i add a material to the plane (floor) and check "matte" in there
it leaves no pure shadows. That would be a great feature to add in the future if possible.

This looks like you have the wrong ID, the ground needs to be transparent, not your object
Yes this was an image from the file I received above.
Like i said in my post, when i use the "matte" checkbox in the ground material, the shadows stop working alltogether.

why do you use matte and render layer together? I can't see any reason for purpose. If you use matte then use alpha channel.TheOracle wrote:Yes this was an image from the file I received above.

Because compositors don't need extra data in the shadow pass. Only shadows.
no colors, no reflections etc. (otherwise it's not an shadow pass)
I did not yet find a way to do this in Octane. It could be that i'm missing something.
Like in the next example (image nr 6 on the left)
That's a shadow pass in most other engines.

In Vray and Arnold they often reverse the black and white data in the shadow pass (or matte shadow pass as it is called in vray)
