Lechu, seriously, it's not going to be drastically different from what we already know. And, if by some miracle of miracles it is, you can't expect everyone to just up and accept being delivered what they didn't in good faith pay for ahead of time. I'm here to test Octane leading up to version one, which will hopefully look just like the roadmap we've all seen. I'm not here to deal with a bunch of other stuff Refractive thought would be beneficial to their business model.

As myself and others have already said many times, we like you are waiting on 2.3. But, I'm not expecting it to be some amazing revelation that'll bypass some obvious issues Radiance has already mentioned will exist no matter what. If my comments on that make me sound like a big ol' whiner to you, then you'll just have to live with it.

How much did U pay for the Octane? 50 or 100 euros? Now compare that price with most people's expectations in this thread/discussion. Octane is the cheapest professional renderer on the market yet most of the people expects updates etc. like they have paid tousands of dollars for it... And of course, everyone is the biggest specialist about software development as I could read earlier.... everyone knows where the development should go etc etc...

Give people a break, You(we) know about the upcoming updates nothing more than Radiance has already said and anything above that are just people's imagination. Just wait and stop complaining is it really that hard? :P (don't take it private, it's to all the complaining people ;) )

I am in a slightly unique position where I have no financial interest (got a lifetime license out of the 1st contest) but I would have probably laid down the $$ just to have a look. I also have no professional interest/integration yet, mainly because the process at present is protracted and does not offer me much above my current pipeline (less infact, come on emitters!). This is because of 2 things, the software I use and Octanes current feature set. If 2.3 has some awesome new functionality, great, bring it on. I might spend some more time trying to tie it in as well. But if any of my data leaves the building through the net connection, that will be the end of the road. Im just a giant skeptic when it comes to remote document/data storage, esp. when it is sensitive data. This decision by Refractive sounds cast in concrete, so all I can do is watch and hope they have made a good choice. If not, they'll just learn from the experience.

So, what price would someone need to spend before they're allowed to feel annoyed at something like this? Keep in mind also that Radiance dropped the price so some of the poorer folks could grab it. If there are people out there like that, then $99 euros isn't a small amount to everyone.

The price paid really has nothing to do with it. Refractive have set the price at $99 euros (ignoring the sale price for a moment) for early adoption of version one, to be eventually completed according to the roadmap. They have the obligation to get it done. They're doing that, but you can't say, "Well you didn't pay much so you have to put up with whatever else the program becomes." That's just silly.
You(we) know about the upcoming updates nothing more than Radiance has already said and anything above that are just people's imagination.
I don't know what you've been reading, but Radiance has said it's some online stuff (which sounds decent enough) with the option to work with the program offline for a time via a panic button, ala XSI. But, the program is designed to be connected to the 'net full-time, which many people can't do.
Just wait and stop complaining is it really that hard?
It's a thread. People can give themselves a break by not reading it. It's not as if there are a bunch of guys spamming the forum. Radiance seems good enough to let people have their say, so I'm saying it. Relax, have some tea, enjoy rendering.

Well I'll definitely take a break ;) I'm just tired of reading complaints everywhere. People complain Blender doesn't have their favourite magic tools everyone separately would like to have... Now Octane... Instead of being happy of having the ability to work almost for free (don't tell that 99 or even 199 euros is a fortune while decent GPU costs at least twice that), people complain about upcoming features knowing only very basic sketch of them... It's pointless, I'm having a break ;)

Hi all,

Can we please leave all this be now ?

We're not that far from releasing 2.3 (next week if things go well),
so you'll find out for yourself.

There's been enough discussion now, i don't see anything constructive in continueing these posts...

who the f. do you think you are to be in the position of instructing people what they may do or may not do vice versa. you and others talk like teen-aged-hobbyist-know-it-alls who're coming from a random gaming forum while having no clue about professional cgi production environments. maybe it wasn't that wise to let anyone in with such a low price-tag...

i've been working in this industry for over 10 years now, working on feature films and large budget advertising campaigns. so let me tell you one thing: it's quite common that render-slaves and most workstations aren't connected to the internet at all! this is mostly exclusively due to security reasons.

so, just because YOU in your apparently semi-professional working environment allow your machine to be online, this must by no means be true for other users!

another thing: it doesn't matter at all how much one payed for a piece of software. any customer has the right to complain about erroneous trends in the development of the product he paid for.

@ topic: if there really will be the requirement that forces the user/studio to set his/their renderering machines to be online while working with octane, this will prolly hurt more then it helps. security concerns play a major role in cg production. octane live as an optional feature could be nice though.

Valentine, U r right about serios CG studios. I don`t like Octane connection idea. But for now, Octane is not for big commercials. It doesnt have many options to use it in serios projects and developers feel free to experiment. I think they understand, that serious work cant be online like serious money for Octane at this time. In future I hope that will be offline professional version, but for now lets stop crying and try to help Radiance to finish Octane without nerves. Lets just play with Octane as it is.
