Hey Folks : )

Im having issues with a Normal Map, i hope anyone came across this before and has some advice.

I created a Normal Map in substance painter and iam getting strange artifacts when rendering with octane v3, while its working fine in cinemas standard render. It seems like it has something to do with the subdivsion inside octane. It seems fine on plane surfaces.

Heres a comparison:

Am i missing something here? I can get more specific about the Normal Map itself but since the standard render version didnt show any artifacts i assume it should be ok.

Thanks in Advantage

I've been seeing this as well in recent builds...
CaseLabs Mercury S8 / ASUS Z10PE-D8 WS / Crucial 64GB 2133 DDR4 / 2 XEON E5-2687W v3 3.1 GHz / EVGA 1600 P2 / 2 EVGA RTX 2080Ti FTW3 Hybrid/ Cinema 4D

Is it fast? Oh, yeah!

Hey jayroth, thanks for chiming in,

I tried a couple things with the Map, but since it works in the standard c4d render i assume theres something inside Octane i need to adjust. This is my first time working with Normalmaps.

Substance gives the option to create Normalmaps based on OpenGL or DirectX, i choose OpenGl there, maybe its about those settings? But then again, it works fine in C4D´s render.

If no one really has a clue i will go back to V2 and try it there.

same here, I am using the real displacement textures demo and with normal maps, I get these artifacts as well. Had to kick them out sadly.

Alright Folks i think i got it.

As i said Substance gives the Option to export OpenGL or DirectX Normal Maps, im also new to this but iam guessing its about the Flip Y-Axis Thing. Anyway.

Check this:

Upper one is DirectX, Bottom one is OpenGL. What changes is the Direction of your Relief. Using the DirectX one made the artifacts go away for me...

This is Substance Painter related @mrom, but i think the overall Concept of these 2 Types of Normal Maps exist everywhere, so maybe u can try to convert your Map into DirectX aswell?
As i understand it now you need the Relief thats "growing out" for Octane in Order to get Stuff to "grow in", it gets reversed.

Hope this helps, as it did for me.
