this torus has a blackbody texture in the emission slot, the shadow is a mystery to me, can someone explain? seems to stay regardless of the number of poly subdivisions in the torus

it's like in real life, this kind of emission is similar to a neon tube, so you have soft shadows. Compare it with a single plan of 1 x1 cm, in this case you have hard shadow and the emission is comparable to a spot light. The form and dimensions of a mesh emitter gives you different results.
