I'm afraid I can't test those scenes at the moment, but yes there is quite some optimizations on max, but in the 2011 and 2010 versions, if you get rid of ribbon and of that annoying floating camera gizmo you'll get quite an improvement, there is some other things you can deactivate, check the area forum, plenty of suggestions there. Drivers are quite important, of course.
Ok, thanks for help! I'll buy a GTX 480 in a couple weeks.. When I get it I'll make some tests and say the result...

Ribbon is useful I guess.. But not always, sometimes I turn it on for modeling when I use expert mode.
I don't know really what is this camera gizmo, but I'll look for those optimizations!
What forum/area are you exactly talking about?

Thanks man!

Cheers!

well I got used to the damm ribbon, but the system is more stable without it. The camera gizmo on the top right corner of each viewport is quite a pain too, and depending of your card choosing direct 9, 10 or 11 can make quite a difference.
The official autodesk forum is called "the area" http://area.autodesk.com/ check the 3dmax forums.
Cheers

aaah, you mean the "View Cube" ? I like it :P

It's nice for reaching some views that do not have keyboard shortcuts...

I know the "The Area" forum.. I have an account there too.. I'll look for those optimizations when I finally get my new computer!

If you get the chance any day soon try making the test with newer versions of Max.. Did you tested another Driver with the GTX 480 ? Any of the 2xx versions? Some people said that they cannot install the driver Radiance had suggested here (197.45 WHQL) that is from the same serie of the one you said.. And they can't istall this one aswell:

Did you do anything different or special to use this driver? Any custom configuration?

PS: BTW, you're from Spain? Madrizz = Madrid ?

Thanks for the help man!!

Cheers!

After reading some posts here, I am thinking about buying GTX 480 for both 3dmax modeling work and octane rendering. But do you know what kind of PSU does it need?
My initial idea was to by QuadroFX1800, but I see after some tests on here, that GTX 480 could outperform quadrofx, even though they are both about same price. I can't really afford to buy 1 card for modeling and 1 card for rendering, so I am trying to find the most affordable and fastest solution. My only question is about power supply, my psu is very weak (350W) I should probably upgrade to 700W for GTX480??

yes, 700w should suffice, but buy a good brand

@pedrodeleo
I hate the "view cube", lol, plain annoying imho, but hey, as long as you can turn it off, I don't care much, hehehe.
Right now I'm using nvidia 258.69, but my primary is on the 260, and I haven't tried out the 470 as display yet, (haven't had a chance) but if I have a few days at the end of next month I'll try to do some tests.
Yep, I'm Spanish, living in Madrid, and the "natives" here pronounce it Madriz, so it's a kind of an unofficial name for it. :D

@kubo

Alright.. I guess this driver is not so good for the Fermis, but if you have the chance, just test it! I thought you were using the GTX 470 for display, as it should be more powerful than the GTX 260..

Hope I can make some tests in a few weeks and post here!! And I hope they have good results..

PS: Congratulations for your World Cup! Nice team! I was supporting Spain when Brazil got out

Thanks for the help!

Cheers!

yep, the 470 is much, much more powerful, but I bought it for octane, so if there is no display attached, Octane can suck every core out of it and while it renders I can do other things I like, as surfing the net, procastinating, and generally just watching the dust pile up, lol (well, actually it means I get more work done, but I do prefer the other options ;) )
Brazil always has a good team, and it's a pleasure to watch them play, even thou I'm not too much into football. Here everyone went crazy, and even I watched all the matches

Hmm yeah, I see your point... When the GPU is rendering the PC starts to act like a P1 400Mhz :P

I'll probably need another card in the future, but then I might look for a basic Quadro solution!

If you have the chance, make some tests with the GTX 470 on display, or even with the GTX 260 just to see how it is compared to another cards. Now I just have to wait a couple weeks until I get my GTX 480, I hope it not disappoint me! And I have to start saving the money for the Octane license!

OFF: I didn't like this Brazilian team, lots of shits playing!! I'm better than lots of them.. But it's ok, we can't win every day, and we'll have some great changes for the next world cup! Football is great!

Cheers mate!

Hey there !

Im planning 2 buy octane with cubix extension for octane, and i have some questions :

1. I read there will be LightWave plugin. Any date on this : ) ?
2. Im working in postproduction / still images industry, and would need more than 4000x4000 renders, which seems to be current limit for octane. When it will be lifted, and what GPU spec would i need to make it work ?
2a. Considering the above question - what would be the choice for best rendering time / viewport speed ? 2x Tesla, 2x GTX480, 4x GTX480 ?
2b. Considering that i will have cubix extension for octane with 2 cards, and 3rd plugged into my motherboard, does it matter what the 3rd card is ? Is it reccomended to have the "same" card as in cubix extension ?
Making it 3 teslas or 3/5 gtx480 ?
3. Instancing/Displacement/SSS - i have read somewhere here, that it is yet to come. Any possible dates ?

Aside - im very impressed by the stuff i see in the gallery, or on youtube. You have the chance to completly change the ways of 3D rendering, and what You are doing here is simply amazing work ! Congrats to the team.
