Hi fuchsundvogel,
I suspect that you are hitting the VRAM limit
could you retry by reducing a bit the Parallel samples value in the kernel tab or with the out-of-core option active?

i have 4GB out of core active. i have 500mb free vram. the strange thing is it renders and this error comes after one hour of rendering.
i will now reduce the scene, maybe it helps.
but what exactly means this error message. failed to set texture format. is there any documentation for the error messages?

Hi fuchsundvogel,
before reducing the scene size, you could try in the opposite side by setting the Parallel samples to 16 in order to overcome the 6GB limit and actually activate the out-of-core function

FYI: I had the same error with a new client today.
At first the thing about textures, then a Nvidia message about Error 999 and a driver reset.
After a lot of trial and error and curses it turns out one of the card's fans had stopped working and it simply had overheated and crashed.
