Little tip:
Remember those old Hammer flicks, horror files where the night scenes were shot in daylight then darken in post?
Do the same thing, light your scene with a bright sky, & maybe add a big light to brighten up the dark areas a little. Use the softest lights by sizing up a Quad light, also size up the sun if you used the environment:DayLight node to about 12. Now edit the exposure gamma till your happy.
The problem is low light areas in a scene don't get enough samples unless your willing to wait for a long render, so cheat and add a few fill lights.
