Hi Chirs. Those are smoothing artifacts caused by low poly geometry. When such things occur one must add more polygons to his/hers models and problem will be gone. I've only circled a few areas, but they're all over the place (all around the red pawn, all around the knight on the top right). It's as if every object had a black outline.
