i believe 2 GTX460 with 2048 mb of ram and compelling price will outperform a gtx 480 with 1500 mb ram!! (2X336 = 672 processors vs 480 of gtx480)

Hi,

the 2GB versions are surely awesome, it gives the much needed memory for running complex scenes into octane ;)

They look affordable and good reviews. What kind of power supply can run these cards together? Do I have to upgrade my 700w psu?

You will need 4x 6pin power connectors.
700W will be fine.

Since Sparkle appear to be the only manufacturer offering these GTX460/2gb cards and there will surely be Octane users interested in buying such a thing, I wonder if Refractive might like to approach the company for some promotional benchmarking to the benefit of all parties. Sparkle may not be aware that there is a ready specialist market for these cards for gpu rendering (not just Octane either). Perhaps they might consider being the manufacturer who is known to engineer their products with this purpose in mind ie. they may be looking for ways to be a niche player among many.
It would be a smallish market but perhaps several hundred more cards could find a home this way...maybe aided by some on site advertising like GPU-X or such.. ;)

poor little things, all those orphans, all those cute GPU's without a home to go to, no worries, we here, the Octane comunity, are moved by their struggle and would happily offer them a new box to call home, out of the kindness of our hearts, of course....
MUHAHAHAHAHAH cheap child-GPU labor!!!!
(I haven't had my caffeine shot yet, just in case you wonder ;) )

 ...there is something slightly disturbing about your response kubo... :?

well, they may look like sweet little orphans  but I think they may be dangerous when you get 2 together
...perhaps a cage rather than a box...

enjoy your coffee my fellow addict :geek: (...I dont know where we get these people...  :P )

Thats a good idea, if theres enough sales because of octane or other renderers they might do a 12GB card :) hehe

I think I will have to pick one of these up.

cheers

lack of sleep plus the strange emptiness of being between projects plus lack of a much deserved coffe set me in a funny mood, I guess I shouldn't reply to post at those times, but heck, then I would hardly reply to anything  And your comment about those cards finding a way home formed a mental image of sad little puppy-gpus in need of adoption, the rest was the caffeine drawback speaking  hehehehe.
And on topic, 2 of those would really be something, with 2Gb you can pack a huge amount of polys but what I like more is that they say that they work at lower temps, and in general are less noisy, especially if they are any quieter than this damm 470's, this thing is louder than my air conditioner unit on steroids!
