I wonder. What's the point of 16x for all cards? Do the cards even require that or are they able to transfer at that speed? And isn't that only important for gaming, where timing is of the essence?

x4 - x16 the scene loading .. reduce the time from starting the render button and you see the picture in the viewport

whichever one of those You're going to take..just do a good research or better even write directly to those companies & ask to veryfy wheather the motherboard would work (with let's say 7 physical GPU if You are planing somethign like that), 'cos some of those motherboard might have issues..that would prevent You from flawless booting. Just a tip.

Tom is right. For dual slot gpus and 4 of them any mobo will work. With 7 or above I'd go with dual xeon having true 80 pcie lanes. There might be some extra bios settings required like 4g decoding and taking care of io space. Tutor wrote about them at his great post.

there is 4d in X99E WS if I'm not mistaking..so in theory it should work with 7GPUs as well, but..some have hard time with it..though it makes little to no sense for me as 8GPus run without issues..

three GPUs, Goldisart, is no problem to msot z97/z170 & other motherbords, but at msot You get a gap between two top GPUs, but then second one would touch the last one.. making layout still workable, but not ideal.. Actually for better layout You should be lookign at x99 motherboards some models like EVGA FTW & Classified would allow placing of 3 GPUs with extra gaps, but..they are somewhat short on features as been released quite a while ago..
