Hey guys, I recently bought octane for 3dsmax but maybe a bit too early or am I missing something here?
I love the way it renders and the speed but is seems far from production ready if you ask me

-sometimes scenes just wont render even though it rendered before and then it show nothing or just an orange plane with a weird gradient on it.
-no maps in max are supported ones you actually use all the time like: composite, noise, gradient, falloff, colorcorrect. (yes fallof and colorcorrect are represented in octane it self but they suck balls)
-all bitmap controls are gone when you load an image through rgb image which almost makes it useless

am I doing something wrong here or am I missing something?, I see some colleagues working in it in c4d and it seems "more complete" than the max plugin.

are these things going to be fixed in a version 3?

Hi,
I use Octane for Max since when it was released 4 years ago.
Unfortunately you can't have all the Max native features, this is valid also for Thea and Arion.
I'd like to have the gradient and falloff features with control over the curve but in Otoy the programmers prefer to develop code for smoke and fire effects...useless stuff at the moment.
I asked for 4 years to enable target lights, no programmer at Otoy was able to enable this feature when Corona full supports all Max standard tools and lights. Corona was coded by one single person.
If you want all enabled Max standard features and you want to use your gpus then go for Iray (the Mentalray version). It doesn't support displacement or participating media. It is not fast as Octane.
Octane produces beautiful renders but you have to find tricks in Max to create your work.
All the other Octane plugins are well developed, I use the Rhinoceros version too. All Octane 3.0 beta plugins are already available except for Max.
If Otoy will not concentrate their efforts on the Max plugin I think that its development will end or another gpu renderer will succeed...

Gabrielefx, fire and smoke might be useless for you or your job, but not for me and many of us!

couldn't agree more with Gabrielefx, even a multi-channel exr file, for max plugin, just so hard to get them supported, not mentioned the damn "save it all" bottom in octane frame buffer, and now the material convert thing is a mess so I have to use 1.9 version...we are keep losing faith for the max plugin!! look at the c4d plugin, it's so perfect and way more better than max plugin

Thanks god I have all I need in version 1.9 of the plugin to use it in production. But the support is really bad now. It was way different some year(s) ago.

So I am not missing anything, I just bought an incomplete render engine virtually useless for production, and version 3 is not going to bring any useful improvement.

thats great.

think everyOne has slightly different needs & there's no need to be angry that You do not like one or the other product. What I would recomend instead is to write for OTOY & ask for refund, if they woud not agree, drop a line somewhere & pass those licences to other Guys (You might loose 10-20$ in order to make Your offer more atractive), but in the end that's what You pay, when do not want to try demo (it was done for a reason). Going through forums or reading manuwal helps a bit as well.

Yep, native Max maps are not supported which sadly rules out Bercon and Siger maps as well, however as this is the same for other GPU engines I accept the limitation and there are pros to Octane that balance it out.
OTOY are also progressing well with their own maps, but yeh I miss advanced Fresnel and gradient maps too...so much potential lost!!

As for the Max plugin, it would appear the developer is working at minimum on two other plugins (Blender and Maya) which may go as far to explain the development speed, lack of community support and constructive interaction with the paying user base. By any logic Max really deserves a dedicated developer....... the love just ain't there and you have every right to be angry here.

Pity, it is what stopped us purchasing minimum 40 seats.

The C4D Plugin however seems to carry a different vibe, looking into my crystal ball I am seriously and begrudgingly considering learning C4D for this reason.

Does c4d octane have support for motion blur for liquids?
