HI. Looking for some advice. I'm thinking of picking up a cheap 12-core Mac Pro as a C4D render node next year (and to offset my tax!). However if I have an Nvidia GPU in the second machine, will Octane see it okay? Or does it need to be in the host machine? Also, I just realised, does this require a second license for Octane or anything?

Hi,
yes, you need a standalone licence for every slave, eg your next mac. With Octane net rendering, the master can use, in conjunction with the internal cards, all the nvidia cards in the slaves, with a max of 12 gpu with v2 and 20 gpu with v3. The Blender plugin is the only one able to use slaves gpus even if the master doesn't have an nvidia gpu.
Let's see how the thing are going to change when OpenCL will be active in the final v3 ;)

The chances of me ever having 12 GPUs are pretty much infinitely small...
