So I'm keen to try out Octane. I downloaded the plug-in demo for 3ds max 2012.
I use a GTX 660 card.
Couple of issues.
1. I get a LOT of crashes from two sources: clicking 'do material conversion' and also just opening the render window. Is this because I've been starting out with an existing vray scene or is the plug-in known to be unstable?
2. Is it generally considered inadvisable to convert scenes that were made in vray vs starting from scratch? or should this pretty much go smoothly?

The demo has some limitations as indicated on the page you downloaded from. Check your scene against those limitations (demo).
Also, some bug fixes has been done on the internal vray converter, so you might want to test with a newer demo instead, that can be downloaded here.
By the way, just letting you know in advance, Octane is not a one-click render especially with existing scenes. In vray, you had to set vray stuff so vray can render. Same with Octane, you have to set Octane stuff for Octane to render. Octane is able to convert some vray materials, and those that aren't converted will appear grey on the octane viewport, after which Octane materials can be applied for rendering. Let us know if you have any problems with some conversion and perhaps send us the scene so we can test and provide solutions for it.
