is there a way to blend different materials via a custom texture map; for example to have metallic glossy stripes on a glass surface......

Create an Octane Mix Material.

Put your base (glass) material in slot 1 and your "coat" (metallic) material in slot 2.

Change the "Amount" value below the two material slots in the mix material to "Texture".

Put your desired alpha map texture there and voila, you'll get exactly what you are after.
