The time has come: my 5 years old pc is exhaling its last breath, so I have to make a decision, and quickly.
I'm completely out of any technical aspect of this argument so I need some help :)

I found on Dell website the Alienware X51 R3:
- Intel® Core™ i5-6400 (6MB Cache, up to 3.3GHz with Turbo Boost Technology) Includes Hyper-Threading
- Windows 10 Home 64bit English
- NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 745 with 4GB DDR3
- 8GB Dual Channel DDR4 at 2133MHz
- 2TB (64MB Cache) 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s

It's a good choice for using it with Daz Studio and Octane?

Thank you
K.

no it isn't very good for Octane for one simple reason, GPU is too weak..so the solution would probably be to speck out Your build & order parts from retailer that would deliver You system tailored for Your needs (especially if You try to save some money), but for this You need to do some homework.

There is something called OctaneBench that would give You some insights on rendering speed from different GPUs - You can make comparisons on Your own. If You need some help, feel free to ask =) there are a lot of users that will give You some information (however You need to make some decisions, about amount You're willing to spend & what are Your preferences)

Thank you very much :)
So if I change the GPU with eventually this: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960 with 2GB GDDR5, could be better?
For the entire build I can afford 1.200-1.400 $ and the desktop I found on Dell it costs 1.200 (with the GTX 960)...

Hi,

best is to check which cards are available for that configuration and compare this with nvidia tech specs.
The interesting specs are the cuda cores and the memory.
I recommend a card with at least min. 4 GB Ram and min. 1000+ Cudas
The Codu Cores gives you an orientation about the speed of the card and the memory is important because you need to hold the object meshes and the textures within the memory of the card.
And if it is you only card in a system you need to calculate that your normal display needs also memory which is around 500-1000 MB of the video memory depending the desktop resolution and number of monitors you use.

So 960 with 2GB is also not my choice here.
If you find a 770 or 970 with 4 GB Ram would be better.

You can find the techs specs here at nvidia page - example of the GTX970 http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop ... ifications
Has 1664 Cuda cores and and 4GB Memory in standard configs. Memory could vari between manufacturer of the card.
For Example you can find GTX780 Cards with 6GB Ram which for example i use as rendercard.

for around that amount You can have a build a PC with at least 780 6gb (now they are on sale for somewhere ~400-500$),
for the rest You can get the system in nice case with speck You're looking..
I would just advice to jump into at least 16GB of RAM as 8GB could be too little...

Thank you all for your good advices, now is a little more clear. So the best way is to build the desktop starting from the GPU right?

This is Octane :) So it is all about GPU :)

At least it is a matter what you can vari and will spent.
I usually do not buy a prebuild system at Dell or whatever - i really want to know whats inside exactly.

So i would start with GPU as described above. A GTX780 with 6GB is a good shot if you can get one.
In actual beta plugin you can define some you your pc memory as out-of-core memory for the renderings so 6Gb will not be your limit for scenes. But using this slows the render down a bit.
16GB of Ram is good. 8 is to less as mentioned. I have no problems to fill 32GB with my DAZ Scenes. So you have to find you way in the middle i guess.
Weather it is DDR3 or DDR4 Ram should not matter. DDR4 and a skylake CPU gives you at the moment no really benefit it seems. If you need to you can go on a more "proved" Hardware to spare some money for the important parts.
As i had learned when you have a large content library i would recommend an SSD or M2 instead a large Harddisk. I mean you will usaully not need 2 TB Harddisk for a Render PC. Only perhaps if you do animations.
But it is really a huge improvement browsing your runtime libs.
Another thing which makes it more comfortable is to have a small videocard for your normal monitor output / display like a GTX650 or something and let the big card only do rendering otherwise with only one card your pc is almost dead when you have an active render running like non paused viewport etc. because the graphics is too busy to draw normal windows.
Also the actual plugin have a slider to vari the GPU Load of Octane the give it more time to do normal operatings like drawing windows but also this slows the render down.

A few months have been passed from the last time I wrote, and now I'm near to buy this Desktop Build (1.100 $):

CPU: Intel Core i7 6700 3,4 Ghz
Motherboard: ASUS Z170-P LGA 1151
RAM: 16 GB DDR-4 2133
Hard disk: SSD 500GB SAMSUNG EVO SATA-3
Video Card: PALIT GeForce GTX 970 4GB Gddr5
Windows 7

Is a good choice? I mean, is a realy enhancement if I compare it with my actual PC:

Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P7P55D
RAM: 8,00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz
Hard disk: 465GB Maxtor STM3500418AS ATA Device (SATA)
Video card: PALIT GeForce GTX 760
Windows 7 (64 bit)

Thank you
K.

I've built my last three PC's and they're all still running without a hitch. I highly recommend this route because it is so much cheaper and you get more for your money. It takes a bit of research to combine the optimum system but in my experience it's far easier to put together the components now than it was ten years ago. Installing Win 10 is very easy too. Once you've settled on the best components for your system choose the most powerful GPU you can afford. It's essential to have a powerful PSU, at least 1300W -1500W because if you add more GPU's in the future you need this amount of power. It's a false economy to skimp on the PSU just to make the initial cost of the system slightly cheaper. If you need more advice about building a system we might be able to help.
