Peter,
Those are the exact steps I followed to modify the kexts. And on my MBA, I do still see the IONDRVSupport.kext so I'm not sure why yours has gone missing?
One last thing I did do was run Kext Utility, which I read somewhere would help set the permissions on the modified kexts correctly. I got mine here:
http://cvad-mac.narod.ru/index/0-4
I'm not using Nvidia drivers so I can't confirm if there's any issue, since my 780 seems to be supported by El Cap native drivers.
I don't really have a cheatsheet, but I've been casually documenting the steps ever since I started doing this from Mavericks, hope the attachment offers some help.

Does anyone have external GPU/thunderbolt in Os X El Capitan

Thanks your tips helped
I see the Nvidia PCE cards in the About this Mac graphics display but they are not recognized as the make i.e. Titan.
I had installed the nvidia and web drivers and cuda El Cap is supposed to support... did you instal any drivers or cuda files??
Or did El cap just take care of it?
I am going to uninstall them and try that.
Thanks gain for any insights
Peter
I did find that ONDRV file.. my bad

Anyone out there know what I might have done wrong
I am on El Cap and and a MacBook Air
I am connected to a Titan Z and a Titan
In My :About My Mac: System information: Graphics/Displays Tab I see
NVIDIA Chip Model GPU PCI
NVIDIA Chip Model GPU PCI
NVIDIA Chip Model GPU PCI
(Two x's from the Z and one x)
But it does not recognize what kind of card it it. Because I am on El Cap I did not instal the Web driver just the Cuda Driver.
One other piece of info... the System/Library/Extensions/ XXX.kext files that one shows package contents and edits the info.plist files in text wrangler shows todays date as the altered date.... good.... but actual NVDAStartup.kext files (as an example) shows an older date... I am guessing a creation date.
I ran Kext Utility file to make sure the kext files were apple certified etc and I see a normal kext file and a fdr called by the same name says AppleHDA.kext.bak that I looks like it is a backup of the old original file. It's appropriate info.plist file has an older date.
I am running rootless. I reboot after each change .
ANY IDEAS APPRECIATED

That was my next step mate.
I have had both types running under Yosemite and I tried Two Z's with this effort and not go so it might be that El Cap does not like Z's.
Will try just the Titan and see if that works.
Darn frustrating... Mac OSx has a lot of good things ... the fact that it is such a dick when it comes to nvidia collaboration is way beyond me man.
Thanks as always Glimpse.
Hope all is well with ya.

Well that did it Glimpse.
Unhooked the Z and it worked....
Anyone running TitanZ's on Mac OSX with e GPU
I think its the new drivers. El Cap has its own Nvidia drivers and if you use those the Z does not show up.
The reason why I think is this is the case is that I upgraded to the latest drivers on my Yosemite machine and the Z stopped it running too.
Thinking that I either have to go back to the old drivers...
Anyone running Z's care to let me know whih driver they are running???
Thanks
