What is your exposure settings?
And some hdr backgrounds work with 1.0 instead of 2.2,
Maybe that is now your case a well?

I've noticed an inconsistency in the lighting and the displayed image when using HDR's.

In order to get correct shadows(that match the shadows in the HDR) I have to turn the gamma way up to 2.2, but then the background image is blown out. If I use gamma 1.0, the background image looks correct, but the shadows do not.

Another reason why it's beneficial to be able to specify separate textures for lighting and reflection/background. Mentalray and Iray have this and it's very useful.

Exposure is 1.0
Texture gamma was 2.2 changed it to1.0 now it looks correct; Thanks for the hint!
Honestly, how to use gamma correctly is still a mystery to me....
