Currently I'm running a 980 and a 750Ti in my rig.

I'm considering buying a new card to boost my render performance.
My question is should I opt for a Titan X or a 980Ti.

Ultimately I'm looking for the most performance, but not at a extreme cost premium. I don't want to throw money at the issue, but I am aware that the higher priced Titan X has considerably more CUDA cores, which I believe is the most important factor when it comes to Octane use.
Im by no means pushing the boundaries of my current setup, though I would like a bit more rendering power as when it comes to animation, though Octane is quick, my cards aren't keeping up.

Can anyone shed any light on what would be the smarter money?

If you dont have massive scenes , ie mainly big textures that will push your GPU memory past 5GB then I would recommend the 980ti for sure. We have 4 of them side by side in a cubix box, however because our scenes are so big we are running into problems with memory, so are looking at the soon to be released 990ti. Should be out in a few weeks.

I don't think there is a 990ti coming.
There hasn't been any talks of a dual gpu maxwell card, and i doubt they would literally kill and piss off the X like that.

There was a April fools joke that circulated the web back then but it was exactly that. a joke

Yeah I'm still in the early stages of learning the ropes in C4D, but having bought Octane, my hunger has jumped to learn more.
My current setup is by no means holding me up, but Octane loves GPU's and the added speed would really just keep me at it because everything pays off quick and keeps me interested in the design process.

I'm currently using a 750W PSU, so an additional 980Ti would certainly call for a new PSU to power the machine.
I could spring for another 980 which would be the cheaper option and probably be ok with my PSU, but the boost in the VRAM and CUDA cores of a 980Ti is very appealing.
It would certainly cost more money for a PSU and a 980 Ti.

A 980 & 980Ti to drive the renders and the 750Ti to handle the viewport would be pretty sweet right?
Does anyone have a similar setup?

A used 780Ti can be had for around $300 on eBay...

I'll be running with 2 x 980 Ti's and a GTX 670 (for on screen performance).
Though I bet I'll pop another 980 Ti in there in no time.
