Hello everyone, just wanted to share two things a'd love to see in version 3.

-Displacement that uses grey as mid value, black as inwards displacement and white as outwards displacement, so i can use zbrush maps properly. i believe a TON of people would benefit from this. Maxwell displacement is a nice example on how it should work. midpoint control could be nice too.

-Rounded edges that actually work! could never make it work in any version i tried, is it ony me or you guys feel the same way?

Can't wait to kill it with v3!
Thank you for reading.

Cheers!

I'm right with you on the displacement issue. And the shift parameter just doesn't cut it. Has to be a grey as mid point, with negative displacement solution.

Yes. But maybe they should add this as a completely new and separate displacement node "Mid-Gray Displacement" (or similar), to not break old projects etc.

Sure. I was more thinking it would be a button/option on the existing. Defaults as black is zero, can be switched to grey, sort of thing.

I'm not expert for gpu coding but as i can know that there is lot of bottlenecks and limitations against cpu programming. Some displacement methods requires a lot of pre-calculations it may not fit easily to Octane's concept. Also Maxwell is cpu renderer. Everythings should be very straight-forward. Btw changing to mid-point gray levels can be good idea for you but not for height maps on geo terrains, etc..

But in any programming (GPU or otherwise), should they not be able to shift displacement map input values (internally, in engine) -128 on the fly?

Propably. There should be options to switch between two type displacement.

Definitely not talking about changing it, talking about adding the option.

definitely these two improvements would be beauuuuuutiful !
I 'm not expert of GPU coding also , however maxwell already announced that it will also gpu , so should not be impossible to be gpu and having a "mid- gray- displacemnt "...
