First of all if you are depending on air cooling then room temperature plays big role in this equation...Your idle and working temp of graphic card will be affected by it. What is your room temp ?

I had problem just like you and i lower my temp by installing third party air cooler, twin turbo or something like that. New cooler lower temperatures and under full stress temperature is around 70C on hot day. My room without AC goes to 28-29C and FAN is working on around 55% which is silent. I could tweak fan but im satisfied with default settings results and noise.

When i play game and lock FPS to 60 then temperature is about 40C (room temp around 26) Fan working on 40%

So, make in your computer case better airflow(get new case), install third party air cooler and control temperature of your work environment.
My computer case sux too and that's why i find this twin turbo fan very good solution...and i enjoyed dismantling my graphic card :)

FURMARK
idle temp for GTX 980TI is around 32C
under stress GTX 980TI is around 83C

Im sure that you will beat this results with optimizations written above....

I hope this helps

your cards are sandwiched too close together imo and temps spike really fast like that...
either get after market water cooling or look into an out of case solution that separates the cards farther apart ---> viewtopic.php?f=9&t=49732

Hi Murat,

I`ve experimented a lot on GPUs when deciding on my initial rig and I have couple of words to say here.

You are seeking benchmark score about 127 / GPU but you`re getting about 108 right ?

My short answer/guess would be :
- You seem to be using a default 980 Ti, where the clock speed is about 1000 MHz whereas there are factory default overclocked cards running -out of the box- 1253 MHz (ZOTAC GeForce GTX 980 Ti AMP! Extreme). This is a 20% gain, which matches the gap exactly you are loking for. Octane Benchmark results are grouped by GPU reference board design, not their overclocking conditions and most of the results you see there are overclocked GPU results.

But, talking about overclocking (and especially in multi GPU targets), ventilation is everything. Forget about stock cooling. You must either switch to hybrid cooling or preferably full water cooling (including memory blocks).
My rig is 3x580 and 1x680(primary). I am using (ASETEK) hybrid cooling on sandwiched 580 boards in the middle and overclocking them about +120MHz Processor and +200 MHZ memory (about 55 C in full load in hot summer days), the bottom GPU is air cooled with a little overclock.
Of course there will be noise until you switch to fully watercooled system but investigating fans (including every famous brands`) my choice happened to be Xigmatek XAF-F1255 (with its 90 CFM 26 dBA performance) for the whole case (including radiators push/pull design).

An important note is that, if ventilatilation and system stability is not achieved, overclocking will be waste of production time because system reboot and reload takes longer time.
Furthermore, weakest chain in production is the human himself. If you are not batch rendering an animation OR not working with optimizing your scenes, 20% increase is nothing but downscaling your rig`s life and increasing your electricity bills.

Another note, Octane was slightly better without SLI but don`t have final benchmark experience in current kernel.

Regards,
