Hello,

We are testing Octane render for possibly replace vray as our renderer in studio.
Octane looks great so far but we ran into issues of turbo smooth modifier (render iteration) not working when its rendered?

Is there ways to work around it? normally we have massive detailed scene without turbo smooth its impossible to make it work.

Thanks in advance hopefully we can solve this issue, and so we can make the purchase.

Cheers

Jimmy

hi jim99, Octane recognizes object render settings (like mesh/turbo smooth or subdivision...) but there is a considerable increase in the render time depending on the iterations, perhaps there are too many iterations on some objects? Also, is the demo crashing on you? can you provide us with your sample scene?

Hi,
I'm not a 3ds user, but maybe you are hitting the current 19m triangles limit (~9m polys) of Octane v2 with a too high subdivision of the geometry
Have you tried with a scene with less objects or reducing the subdivision a bit?

Hi abreukers ,

Thanks for your reply, my problem is mesh/turbo smooth modifiers, does not update when octane viewport renders .

For example I have set my turbo smooth modifiers render iteration 2, when octane renders it doesn't apply the iteration 2 to the object
We need this feature, since our production files are huge, if we turn on turbo smooth modifiers on in view port it will be impossible to move
around in the viewport also crashes max in some cases.

I am wondering if there are anyway to work around it ?

I have uploaded a test scene with simple object, as you can see the teapot doesn't update the turbo smooth modifiers render iterations at all.
another problem is we get weird shadows on the mesh if the turbo smooth is turned off?

Hi bepeg4d ,

Thanks for the tip on 9m polygon, we haven't started testing on massive scene yet. We are hoping first to solve the mesh/turbo smooth modifiers, update issue when octane viewport renders .

Thx

Hi Jim,
Ok, strange shadows if the turbosmooth is disabled is something expected, Octane has not enough polygons for them.
In c4d we have the octane object tag for changing the smooth settings and so on, I think in Max should be proxy or something similar

Still cant find any solution to this problem, There is no smooth setting under octane object properties in 3dsmax ?
Do I need to export the animation into standalone version and add smooth to it ? Can someone at 3dsmax plugin department help me with this ?

Thanks

J
