Can't find a way to import .obj to the stand alone

Thanks Paul,

Last place I'd look. here's my current problem. I model in Revit (and have that plugin), but thought I'd get better sharpness, etc. out of 3ds Max plugin, so I got that. But I couldn't figure out how to get the Octane Sky System. So I was fooling around with the Stand-Alone and that has it pretty straightforward. But Stand-Alone is quicker rendering. So I decided to use a 3ds Octane export in the Stand-Alone. Which came in fine but different, completely unrelated objects shared the same material in Stand-Alone, for some reason. I couldn't figure out how to separate them. So I decided to export out of 3ds as .OBJ thinking that might do the trick. But, of course, couldn't figure out how to open or import an .OBJ

So I just did what you suggested and voila, it imported. But many of geometries are screwed up, and ALL of the objects share the same material...:(. I exported the .OBJ out of 3ds just straightforward. Do you know if there's something missing?

I haven't bothered to experiment at length with obj export from 3ds max, but it seems at least by default, that if two different materials had the same shaded color (rgb) values, they get munged into the same material in the obj file. This is rather annoying and ads some tedium to file prep before exporting.

Thanks, MB. That's not the case so far as I can tell. But it's hard to tell what's going on with the 3ds Max plugin either. So far as I'm concerned, both the 3ds Max Plugin and Stand-Alone are a mess. I hate to say it, because the software has so much promise. But so much doesn't work with Octane. Honestly, this product seems like a Beta to me. I'm giving it a rest until they get their act together. Maybe they've given up, too, until Octane 3 comes out. that's all I can think of.

The OctaneRender for Revit plugin has exactly the same Octane controls as the 3ds max plugin. You will get the same "sharpness" from both.
But Stand-Alone is quicker rendering.
Octane Standalone renders at exactly the same speed as the Revit and 3ds max plugins. The only difference would be if you are only using a single card, then Revit/3ds might hikack some of your cards performance for their OpenGL processing.

If you export an entire scene from any 3d app as a single OBJ, materials of the same name will be merged in the OBJ file. Instead, you can open the Viewport in Revit, and rightclick the settings tree and export to ORBX/OCS. You can then load that file into Octane Standalone.

Geofnarlee, I don't know what is going on but our office has been using octane with revit and the revit plugin, and with standalone for over three years now and have upwards of fifty seats. It has become a beloved programs for its speed and simplicity and the ease with which quality results can be achieved. Our only obj issues have been multiple materials collapsing to a single pin if someone takes the revit models into max and then exports to obj. This is a function of the max obj exporter. Follow faceoff's method above, it will be worth it.
