Windows 10?

Hey Guys, I am running low on the SSD that I have Win7 on (128GB 840EVO). I was planning on getting a larger SSD to be new c:\, before doing upgrade to Win10. When I do, could I not just "show hidden files" and copy over entire contents of current c-drive to new one, then change the name of old Windows folder (to _Old_Windows, or something), and just boot from new?... Or do I have to use one of those apps made for moving whole drive contents from one to another... I have never used one before...

That's a really BAD idea... Windows is not just in the Windows folder, the registry and other system files are all over the place.FrankPooleFloating wrote:When I do, could I not just "show hidden files" and copy over entire contents of current c-drive to new one, then change the name of old Windows folder (to _Old_Windows, or something), and just boot from new?...
There are tons of free tools for creating a clone of your installation, search the web or check YouTube, you will find what you need.

How big is your drive. I got over space issues by having most of my programmes install to the second drive, rather then my SSDFrankPooleFloating wrote:Hey Guys, I am running low on the SSD that I have Win7 on (128GB 840EVO). Clone! That's the word I was looking for! Thanx Rikk! Hey Rikk, what was the outcome of the situation with those a-holes that were stealing your artwork and calling their own? Did you (or employer) get a cease and desist etc?
840EVO 128GB is current c:\ Gord. Down to 15GB available now! Zoinks!... Going to drop a 256GB EVO in for c:\.. that should be plenty. While I'm at it, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on m.2 for jobs drive, and get a couple more SSDs and clone my Barracudas so there are no more spinning drives (finally, after all these many years). I might also do 2 840EVO 128GB as Raid 0 and make those stock, textures, hdr, cache etc... prolly not as fast as the m.2, but should be purdy damn fast. Really nice having 10 Sata 3 on X99.
Thanks again bros.

Alright, I got convinced by a friend to do the upgrade to Win10, and I did it...
It wasn't very smooth in my case, the first two upgrade attempts failed, because apparently you need at least 30GB of free space on C drive...
Then the upgrade was successful, but NOTHING was working, like really, nothing! Clicking the icons had no effect, the whole system was unresponsive, not even CTRL+ALT+DEL was working... After few hours of trial and error, I found out that the problem was my antivirus. It turns out that after the update it was doing some massive system scan in the background, causing the entire OS to be unresponsive...
It kinda works now, but it looks like my desktop PC has turned into a smartphone...

It needs 30GB free on C drive? where did you see that? If that's true, I won't be upgrading my 3D machine any time soon

I have spent the past few days killing various processes, removing virus protection, etc in an effect to work out what processes are using 100% of my CPU or 100% of my hard disk. Looks like the culprit is the pre-ordering of windows process (which you would think would be removed once you actually upgrade!). Also, delete, disable, kill, remove the Customer Experience Feedback stuff, which seems to be causing a lot of issues. I wonder if the entire worlds electricity consumption increased a few percentage once Win 10 was released, with all out CPU's working so much harder. It turns out that after the update it was doing some massive system scan in the background, causing the entire OS to be unresponsive

=DDD.. the reason to wait =)face_off wrote:I have spent the past few days killing various processes, removing virus protection, etc in an effect to work out what processes are using 100% of my CPU or 100% of my hard disk. ... I think if you do a clean install - it would be fine. But upgrading from Win8.1 to Win10 is a flawed concept. There is too much legacy stuff people will have installed on 8.1 which is going to trip Win10 up.=DDD.. the reason to wait =)
On the plus side, it has actually fixed some of the problems I was having with Win 8.1. Despite my early grumblings, I'm actually find Linux an easier environment to maintain and support and keep up to date, and is now my preferred environment. It doesn't seems to have all those services running in the background which randomly start ing 100% of your cpu/disk. And when something really bad goes wrong on Linux, you can generally fix it. But on Windows it is very very hard. On Windows, if your Kernel process is using 100% disk resources for 30 mins, it's pretty tough to sort out the reasons for it.

Officially it only needs 3.5 GB, but I had 6 GB free the first time, and it failed. Then I freed up 15 GB and it failed again. Finally, after removing a lot of useless junk, I freed up 30 GB, and I could finally upgrade.gordonrobb wrote:It needs 30GB free on C drive? where did you see that?
